Archive for August 2023Stay Headed in the Right Direction, MedinaPosted August 27, 2023 7:48 AMPower steering is standard on nearly every vehicle in Medina, OH, these days. Now there are some exotic, new types of power steering systems, but for the most part, the general setup is a pump that's driven by a belt powered by the engine. Contact the automotive professionals at Jud's Best Auto Service in Medina for questions about your power steering. The pump generates power that assists drivers as they steer their vehicle around Medina, OH. Power steering systems use hoses to move pressurized fluid back and forth. These hoses can develop leaks so it's a good idea to have Jud's Best Auto Service inspect them at every oil change. In addition to providing a boost, the fluid cleans, cools and lubricates the power steering system. Over time, the lubricants and detergents diminish so Medina drivers need to replace their old fluid with clean, fresh fluid periodically. At Jud's Best Auto Service, we use a detergent to clean the system, flush out the old fluid and replace it with new fluid. Jud's Best Auto Service What Is a Differential and Do You Have One?Posted August 20, 2023 9:41 AMWith front-wheel drive being so common these days in Medina, OH, the differential is just taken care of during a transmission service, so most Medina drivers don't even have to think about it. And rear-wheel drive differentials don't need to be serviced for years, so it's understandable that it's not something on the top of Medina customers' minds. It's not uncommon for drivers to not know they have a differential let alone know that it needs service. Call Jud's Best Auto Service in Medina at (330) 722-5100 for information about differential service, or stop by our Medina, OH, auto center at 895 W Liberty Street, 44256. To better understand what a differential does, think about our local Medina high school track. There are lanes marked off on the track. For the longer distance races, the starting lines are staggered. The starting lines for the outside lanes are ahead of the starting lines for the inside lanes. That's to compensate for the longer length of the outside lanes. Staggering the starting lines means that each runner has the same distance to run. Jud's Best Auto Service The Straight and Narrow: Power Steering Service at Jud's Best Auto ServicePosted August 13, 2023 8:47 AMService to a vehicle's power steering system is part of preventive maintenance for Medina auto owners. This system provides power to the steering wheel so you can turn it with ease. Without power steering, all of the power to turn your vehicle's wheels would have to come from you. Jud's Best Auto Service No Strain, No Gain (The Basics of Oil Filters)Posted August 6, 2023 7:20 AMEver wonder what one of the best things is to ever happen to your vehicle's engine? It's the little thing that usually looks like a can, the oil filter. Just like your kitchen sink strainer filters out errant particles of food from clogging your drain, the oil filter cleans out small particles that could cause your engine harm. Your engine operates in a dirty, hot environment and gathers a lot of tiny contaminants like dirt, dust, little metal shards and unlucky bugs that get sucked in. Get those things circulating in your engine and those little particles can cause friction, which starts wearing out those finely machined metal parts. You know how important it is to change your oil regularly. It's vital that you change your oil filter at the same time to keep the oil as close to brand new as possible. Most oil filters look like a metal can with some holes in the bottom. Inside there are carefully chosen materials that can screen out the contaminants while at the same time allow the lubricating oil to pass through. Early oil filters had steel wool, metal mesh or actual screens. Then they tried fabric filters using material such as linen and cotton. Finally, a less expensive disposable filter using paper and cellulose did the trick. Cellulose or other synthetic media are used in most oil filters today. Cellulose is inexpensive and effective. Fibers filter out particulates and let the oil flow. The other synthetic media have the ability to screen out even tinier particles while not significantly restricting the oil from getting through. Engineers continue to work on even more advanced filter material. Choosing the right oil filter is something our pros at Jud's Best Auto Service can help you with because there are a lot of them out there. Factoring into that decision are your driving habits, how far you drive and the temperatures to which your engine will be subjected. While some filters will cost more than others, they may be worth it to extend the life of your engine. But most important is remembering to come have your oil changed at Jud's Best Auto Service regularly at the intervals recommended by the vehicle's manufacturer. Just like you wouldn't want to have a plumber come over to fix a clogged kitchen drain, you certainly wouldn't want to have to pay for major engine repairs if they could be prevented by regular oil and filter changes.
